My name is Yulia, and I'm an actress from Kharkiv, Ukraine.

A year ago, my friends Danya, Ilya, Marianna, and I formed an artistic group called "Shadow Room."
We created this artistic community in response to the beginning of the full-scale
invasion in Feb. 2022.
We just realized that we had to do something.

Thus, the first performance of the Shadow Theater, "Reconstruction," was born. It was a performance about the destroyed houses of our childhood, a piece about Kharkiv and Mariupol.

SHADOW ROOM

It's been a year since we were founded (we celebrated our birthday on April 6)

and during this time:

- our team has grown 5 times (now "Shadow" has 21 people around it!)

- we created 2 more new performances ("Light Seekers" and "All Her Things")

- we held 1 educational course on theater for young artists

- and now, quite recently, we have rented our own space!!!

We searched for a long time and managed to find the perfect home for us!

So, we rented a
safe basement in downtown Kyiv, which will become our creative home for at least the next six months.

WHY HAVE WE RENT THE SPACE?

Because we realized that young artists need a place to develop and create, a place that would stimulate the new wave of theatre movement in Ukraine.

We have no state support, but we realize how much impact our initiative has already created:

  • Individual young artists have become part of the community and consolidated their power and intentions;

  • Artists have the opportunity to realize themselves safely and freely, rehearsing performances, creating theater puppets (we are launching an atelier), and engaging in self-education and professional skills development. We also conduct theater trainings, lectures, discussions, and even plan entire courses;

  • This is a new artistic initiative that shapes culture and provokes its development in times of active war, when the previous state of affairs have been irrevocably broken;

  • It is significant moral support for all of us during this time;

As a non-governmental institution run by young artists, we invite you to support us.

We are looking for ways and developing a strategy by which we will be able to pay off the rent in the future ($500 per month), but now we are building our muscles and learning, so we invite you to support us and our initiative:

NOW WE ARE LOOKING FOR     $3000 to rent the space for 6 months!

Your support

will give us the strength, energy, and inspiration to move forward and continue to develop this energetic young center.

The space is costs us approx:

$16.6 per day

$116.6 per week

500$ per month

3000$ for six months - our goal

We will be grateful for any amount, even the smallest, because we know that the largest fundraisers to support the military in Ukraine are boosted by the smallest donations!
Your donation will literally provide us with a place for creativity and development, which gathers dozens of talented and strong artists around us.

Here's what we've already done to make our idea a reality:

  • We have already paid rent for two months (April and May 2023);

  • We have bought 12 chairs and 2 tables for our educational program;

  • Thanks to a friend, we have found a projector and microphones. We are setting up a studio in one of our rooms for recording podcasts about contemporary theater;

  • We have also installed the Internet and paid for it for April and May;

OUR PLANS FOR THE NEXT 6 MONTHS:

  1. To create a performance about Ukrainian pop-culture based on the biography of Ukrainian enslaved writer Taras Shevchenko.

  2. To develop an educational course about performativity in theater and discovering new tools for theater art in terms of war.

  3. To create a bunch of educational events like a language speaking club, lectures, discussions, and a reading club.

  4. To share our space with other young artists who have artistic ideas but don't have the resources to embody them.

  5. To rehearse and develop our performances and make them ready to tour around East Ukraine.

All donors are the best friends of Shadow Room.

We are waiting for them in Ukraine, in particular in our Shadow House!
